This article discusses the relevance of critical mathematics teaching for individual development. This bibliographic study, with a qualitative approach (Gil, 2022), aims to discuss children's learning through critical thinking in mathematics teaching, in light of Skovsmose (2014) and the literary narrative "The Color of Mathematics" by Elis Santana (2021). Interpretive analysis (Severino, 2016) supported the reflection on the data collected. Learning mathematics from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective is a promising path to learning and contributes to breaking down socially pervasive stigmas that sometimes hold this field responsible for academic failure.
