USE OF INDICATORS IN WATERSHED DECISION-MAKING: A Scoping Review in the Field of Environmental Sciences
Keywords:
watershed management, decision-making, indicatorsAbstract
What are the main characteristics of indicator studies used in watershed management? The objective of the study was to identify how the research agenda regarding indicators used in watershed management is organized in the field of Environmental Sciences. A scoping review was conducted, with data from articles published in the Scopus database, analyzed using scientometric methods. The results indicated that the studies are centered on two major research strata: the focus on single indicators and the focus on comprehensive indicators and integrated assessment models. The human-water relationship seeks to balance anthropogenic actions from a holistic perspective with studies that explore the governance and sustainability of watersheds. We conclude that the complexity of natural systems and the various uses of watersheds require the use of comprehensive and multi-objective methods for decision-making.
