The current work was to analyze the difficulties of access and permanence of five quilombola students of the Licentiate in Biological Sciences course approved by the Special Selection Process for Indigenous and Quilombola (SSP-IQ) of the Federal University of Pará on the university campus of Marajó–Soure. The work aims to discuss the affirmative action policy and its consequences in public higher education, as well as emphasize the nuances of the formal and informal strategies of permanence used by these students. To meet the research objectives, a qualitative approach was adopted, through the application of semi-structured interviews. The research results indicate that there are many challenges for the permanence of quilombola students in higher education in the Marajoara Amazon, among them are: adaptation to the university world, financial difficulties with university costs and difficulties with commuting to their community. To make visible the challenges and strategies of permanence of these subjects is to contribute to studies related to the quilombola scenario and enable the formulation or adaptation of public policies for access and permanence, understanding the university space as an environment formed by different social groups.
