This article ethnographically investigates commercial exchanges at the municipal market of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM), a town in the northwestern Amazon. More specifically, I focus on the resale sector, which mediates the relationship between producers and consumers. Based on my close interaction with a particular reseller, I aim to ethnographically understand what I call the "origin of value" and the "value of origin"—that is, which variables assign value to a commodity and how its geographical origin contributes to adding value, respectively. This analysis is grounded primarily in the analytical contributions of Karl Marx and Nancy Munn. I conclude that the social relations woven both with producers and with consumers should be understood as labor, and that it is less a matter of a given geographic origin than of these relationships constructed through time and space that build it.
