Abstract

Memories of the Steel Railway and Carajás Iron Road in the 1970s

ABSTRACT: The governments of army-general-presidents in Brazil presented numerous controversies, mainly regard to their methods of administration and management of economic resources that ended up triggering the construction of large works by the State. Some of these works were called "Pharaonic Constructions", among them are the Steel Railroad and the Carajás Iron Road. Idealized as a promise to boost the Brazilian economy, the construction of the known railroads started with great expectations. In order to demonstrate the socio-environmental and socio-economic impacts caused by these constructions, a historical analysis of its path is necessary, and how it has become a project marked by economic, social and socio-environmental transformations. In order to demonstrate these problems and their influence throughout history, this work comes through bibliographic research of academic works related to the theme and documents of the time, transmitting in hypothesis the neglect caused by the Steel Railroad and the Carajás Iron Road. Keywords: Steel Railway; Carajás Iron Road; Military dictatorship; Pharaonic Works.
