RESUMO
O interesse pela diversidade dos usos da língua e pelas diferenças dialetais acompanha a história das sociedades, assumindo diferentes funções, que vão da simples observação empírica à descrição sistemática das línguas. Nesse contexto, esta pesquisa analisa a variação lexical referente à denominação do ato sexual na cidade de Manaus. Este estudo ancora-se na Sociolinguística Variacionista (Labov, 2008). Além de ampliar a discussão para a questão de tabu linguístico (Orsi, 2011). Considera-se ainda a perspectiva de que o léxico sexual constitui espaço privilegiado de criatividade linguística e marcação social. Enquanto a Sociolinguística busca explicar a variação linguística a partir de fatores sociais, a Dialetologia dedica-se à descrição e à contextualização dos usos linguísticos segundo sua distribuição espacial, histórica e sociocultural, conforme definição de Cardoso (2010). Diante desse viés descritivo, a pesquisa adota a perspectiva dialetológica para identificar e situar os diferentes usos linguísticos observados no espaço urbano manauara.

LEXICAL VARIATIONS FOR THE SEXUAL ACT IN THE CITY OF MANAUS: A SOCIOLINGUISTIC STUDY.

ABSTRACT
Interest in the diversity of language use and in dialectal differences has accompanied the history of societies, assuming different functions that range from simple empirical observation to the systematic description of languages. In this context, the present study analyzes lexical variation related to the naming of the sexual act in the city of Manaus. The research is grounded in Variationist Sociolinguistics (Labov, 2008). It also broadens the discussion to include issues of linguistic taboo (Orsi, 2011). The study
further adopts the perspective that the sexual lexicon constitutes a privileged space for linguistic creativity and social marking. While Sociolinguistics seeks to explain linguistic variation based on social factors, Dialectology is devoted to the description and
contextualization of linguistic uses according to their spatial, historical, and sociocultural distribution, as defined by Cardoso (2010). In light of this descriptive orientation, the research adopts a dialectological perspective to identify and situate the different linguistic uses observed in the urban space of Manaus.
