The theme of sustainability lies at the heart of humanity’s concern for the future. The risk society, a synthesis of human production of diffuse power within a planetary world order, laid the foundations of uncertainty, sharpened the contradictory dialectic between trust and distrust toward knowledge, weakened the conviction that human reason could control the historical mechanisms of evolution, and that science could identify and intervene in all the causal mechanisms sustaining life—especially human life on Earth. The spirit of the emerging culture of the risk society challenges utopias, creeds, paradigms, epistemes; it transforms expectations of building well-being, fraternity, and abundance into fragile probabilities of achievement. Old and new specters recreate myths of returning to paradise under banners of communitarianism, frugality, simplicity. Old orders of domination rely on strategies of confrontation that intensify irrationality and accelerate the likelihood of war.
