Hospitality

A reflection on the course of the civilizing process.

Abstract

The civilizing process accompanies societies throughout their development and changes in patterns
of conduct. Rules of etiquette and good relationships are hallmarks of this process. Hospitality is
embedded in this process and oscillates more or less, influenced by individualization and social
differentiation occurring in more complex societies. The purpose of this article is to offer a
reflection of hospitality in the context of simpler communities from the point of view of the
civilizing process. The approach is qualitative and the research is bibliographical with the
contribution of Alain Montandon, Luiz Octávio de Lima Camargo in the perspective of the civilizing
process of Norbert Elias, aided by the discussions of Gláucio Matos (2015).
