In this article Alberto Rangel's Inferno verde and Ferreira de Castro's A selva are reviewed under the standpoint of the documentary romance, considering that both works operate with the realism that produces the witness text, reflection and
disclosure of social conflicts, highlighting that while the character of Rangel's novel places him within Pre-Modernism that of Castro's establishes the beginning of the Portuguese Neo-Realist Literature.
