Abstract

This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) aimed to identify the socio-environmental impacts caused by public cemeteries. The research was conducted in the CAPES, Google Scholar and Scielo databases, identifying 1420 articles, of which 27 were selected for analysis. The impacts identified include the contamination of aquifers and soils due to the leaching of metals and necrotic leachate, in addition to the generation of solid waste such as paper, plastic, metals, remains of wreaths, flowers, candles and construction materials. The results showed that the management of cemetery waste is inadequate and lacks efficient environmental planning. The need for improvements in environmental legislation and the adoption of sustainable technologies to minimize environmental damage was identified. As a proposed intervention, we suggest the development of Cemetery Management Plans and the adoption of methods such as human composting, the creation of vertical cemeteries and the use of bioremediation techniques. The discussion highlights the urgency of updated regulations and the implementation of environmental strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of public cemeteries. It is concluded that there is an urgent need for improvements in the environmental management of these spaces in order to ensure sustainability and the protection of natural resources.
