Abstract

The field research carried out in Humaitá-AM analyzed how the floods of the Madeira River reveal environmental racism. Residents of vulnerable neighborhoods, mostly Black and low-income, reported losses of homes, furniture, and living conditions. Many mentioned diseases such as malaria, lack of drinking water, difficulty in transportation, and absence of adequate shelters. The reports show a feeling of abandonment and a lack of effective public policies. Government assistance appears late and insufficient, reinforcing social and environmental inequalities. Poor infrastructure, lack of sanitation, and little preventive action were also observed. The situation reveals how environmental disasters disproportionately affect marginalized populations. The study highlights the importance of environmental justice and the inclusion of these communities in decisions about their territories.
