Abstract

Environmental Education is formally established in Brazilian legislation and addressed by the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC). The National Policy on Environmental Education (PNEA) sets, among its fundamental objectives, the integrated comprehension of the environment in its multiple and complex relations. Building on this framework, this article discusses the use of simulation and role-playing techniques as a pedagogical tool within the context of Environmental Education. To do so, it mobilizes the theory of experiential learning and empirical studies regarding the applicability and potential of the simulated approach. The discussion highlights key issues such as the comprehension of complex phenomena in volatile and uncertain contexts, the development of empathy, and the improvement of student engagement. Ultimately, the paper argues that the strategic use of the simulated approach can significantly contribute to Environmental Education and the formation of informed and active citizens.
