Responsibility towards the world

Abstract

Considered a patrimony of mankind and the last natural reserve in the world, the Amazon and its conservation represents internationally and nationally the "salvation" necessary to help the planet Earth from the evils caused by polluting industries, not only from the more developed countries, but also from Brazil itself. Coming with the concerns pointed out by Samuel Benchimol in his 1992 book "The War on the Forest", which deals with the social thought of the author and the environmental issue and regional development, the article aims to show that, behind the ecological discourse there are political and economic interests hidden by those who defend the world's largest forest reserve, located largely in the northern region of Brazil. In addition to Benchimol (1992), this article brings the arguments of theorists such as Fearnside (1990, 1998a and 1985b), Sachs (2002), Freitas (2004), Carvalho (2007) and Leff (2003) such as IBAMA, IBGE, WWF and UNESCO. The arguments presented are theoretically based on the environmental crisis and sustainability, the Amazon and sustainable development, and, finally, interests for the conservation of the Amazon, thus contributing to the presentation of a themeof vast interest and discussion.
