ABSTRACT

The communication aims to present a reading of the issues surrounding Fordland project (agroindustry rubber cultivation project, implemented by the Ford Company in Amazonia), illustrated in the novel Velas na Tapera by Carlos Correia Santos. For this, the research followed a methodological trajectory marked by the comparative approach, seeking to promote dialogue between certain historical-political studies that turn to the Amazonian conjuncture between the 20s and 40s (of the 20th century), and literary fiction, understood as a source for the record of history. Thus, the studies of Creso Coimbra (1981), Wolfgang Iser (1996), Edilza Fontes (2002), Antonio Candido (2006), Nazaré Sarges (2002) and others have become fundamental for the analysis. Among the conclusions that emerged, we highlight the expressive value of literary material for the record of history in the Amazon. Both the characters and the plot, constructed in the novel, correspond to a moment of overthrow not only of the latex economy and trade, cultivated in the Amazon, but also the depletion of moral and existential values, especially of the native population. In the figure of the character Rita Flor, for example, the author typifies a living standard of Fordland project itself. Through the countless losses of this character, we have the synthesis of the abandonment and "subtraction of life and hope" of the inhabitants / workers (in general), Fordland, given the abandonment of the project, by its idealizer. Amidst her pains (her pains and a collective disenchanted with the decadence of Fordlândia), Rita Flor, like so many other characters (of romance and "real history"), takes refuge in the splendorous moment of the project, by the fleeting pleasure of quiet, prosperous life, of "better days" for the local population.
