ABSTRACT: The present study has as main objective to analyze the toponyms of the insular region of Ananindeua, in the state of Pará, and their respective motivations, in the light of Onomastics thought mainly by Dick (1990a, 1990b and 1975). In order to do so, nine out of the fourteen islands of the metropolitan area of Belém were considered as belonging to the municipality of Ananindeua, namely: Viçosa Island, João Pilatos Island, Santa Rosa Island, Guajarina Island, Sassunema Island , Sororoca Island, São José de Sororoca Island, Arauari Island and Mutá Island. These islands are to the north of the municipality above and are almost all inhabited. They have seven communities, several rivers and streams, which are also objects of this research. The islands were initially inhabited by indigenous peoples and currently by the seventh generation of the family of Senhor Manoel Nazareno, one of the interlocutors of the research. In each of these islands, we tried to interview subjects, stratified by age (+ 50 years), sex (male and female) and schooling (not schooled or schooled until the 8th grade and schooled from the 1st year of high school). Data collection was first performed through documents (maps, articles, periodicals) and later, in loco, through the recording of narratives told by the interviewees, about the history of the place, the history of the names and their word causes. This research tends to constitute a continuity of scientific research in the context of onomastic studies, and the analysis of its data allowed us to identify, among the toponyms, names of Portuguese origin and Tupí origin. Keywords: Toponyms.
